Exercises in Melody Writing - Exercise 01

Intro

Below is the exercise and my solutions for Chapter 1

Exercise

The exercise for the first chapter involves writing a number of original melodies taking the following rules into account:

• Major keys only
• Use all keys but don’t change key during a melody
• Write the melodies as 4-Measure Phrases (outlined above)
• Uniform rhythmn, one tone to each beat
• Incorporate the scale line, repeated tones and narrow leaps
• Ensure active steps always resolve in the proper direction (excepting for narrow leaps which should be used sparingly)

Solutions

I used MuseScore 3 to write the melodies and to play them back, in the end I put together three sets in different keys / time signatures each consisting of x8 four measure phrases.
